Poverty Or Wealth: Which Is Your Decision?

I’m quite sure many who read this piece will be amazed at the title. Their reaction could be “why would anyone decide on poverty and not wealth?”

Well, I will tell you that there are those who have taken a conscious decision or vow of poverty as part of their vocation in life. By that, I’m referring to Priests, Reverend Sisters, Reverend Brothers and the Religious.

However, this article is not about the clergy and the religious. There are however, those who have also unconsciously taken a decision of poverty, out of ignorance.

The preceding statement is one of the reasons why millions and millions of individuals struggle through life financially to make ends meet. Take note also, that I’ve made a distinction between conscious and unconscious decisions on poverty.

While the clergy and religious make a conscious decision of poverty, others do so unconsciously out of ignorance. Most people in life want financial success, fame, recognition from an innate desire or ambition.

Only very few are able to attain it. Why? The simple reason is that those who attain financial success, fame, and recognition in whatever endeavor they choose have made a conscious decision to achieve.

While the decision on poverty is mostly an unconscious one made out of ignorance, the decision on wealth is a conscious one made out of determination and an innate desire to achieve.

So what’s the difference in these decisions? The difference lies in the thoughts we place on our minds, the words we speak and the actions we undertake every single day of our lives.

Basically, the person who has made an unconscious decision of poverty out of ignorance does so when he or she:

(1) has a wish to be rich and does not make any effort or have a definite plan towards attaining it.

(2) usually gives up at the slightest obstacle or challenge encountered whenever he or she tries to make an effort in pursuit of financial success.

(3) neither understands nor believes that anyone regardless of educational achievement, background, race or financial status is capable of achieving whatever they set their hearts on.

(4) in an attempt to attain wealth and success, jumps from one activity to the next and then to the next and so on without reaching a conclusive end on anyone of those activities. Simply put, a clear lack of focus.

(5) is afraid of failure and tries everything possible not to fail, which is usually a result of habit or experience gotten from several years of formal school and interactions with people of similar views (family, friends, teachers, etc).

(6) acquires degrees and certificates from formal school and believes these are sufficient to attain wealth and success in life. Such a person does not make any more conscious effort beyond formal school to learn other things about life and success from genuinely successful individuals to know what truly leads people to success.

(7) does not make valuable use of the hours of each day on activities aimed at attaining their dreams but rather spends a better part of each day watching television, visiting people from whom they learn nothing valuable except probably gossip, reading books on love stories and fiction, etc.

(8) focuses more on problems and keeps complaining about them without doing anything. Such a person always waits for things to happen.

(9) does not know or understand the connection between the dominating thoughts on one’s mind and physical realization of those dominating thoughts, and unconsciously allows negative thoughts to be the one dominating their minds.

These negative thoughts come from different sources and mostly from negative words of criticism and advice of family, friends, loved ones, acquaintances, etc that triggers worry, fear and uncertainty in the mind of the person receiving the advice.

From what you can see in the preceding paragraphs, it does not take much effort, if any at all, to make an unconscious decision on poverty. On the other hand, a person who has made a conscious decision of wealth and success will do so because he or she:

(a) has an innate and genuine desire to be rich and makes a definite effort towards attaining it. Please note the very valuable phrase “innate and genuine desire.” Nothing can be attained without first a desire to do it.

(b) does not give up at the slightest obstacle or challenge in their effort to acquire wealth and success because they know that you have failed in what you want to achieve ONLY when you give up.

(c) understands and believes that anyone of any situation in life is capable of achieving whatever they set their hearts on.

(d) is focused on what they want to achieve and carry on till the end, whether it is an initial success or not because they understand that there are always valuable lessons to learn from every effort made towards achieving a purpose.

As author John Maxwell put it, “One of the greatest problems people have with failure is that they are too quick to judge isolated situations in their lives and label them as failures. Instead, they need to keep the bigger picture in mind.”

(e) is not afraid of failure on the road to achievement because they have come to understand as stated in the inspirational words of Napoleon Hill that, “Every adversity, every failure and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or a greater benefit.” And so such an individual moves beyond any failure to become an achiever.

(f) knows the value of continuous learning with an open mind beyond acquiring a
degree at formal school and makes conscious efforts at learning the habits and secrets of genuinely successful individuals.

(g) makes valuable use of the hours of each day and spends a better part of it on activities aimed at attaining their objectives in life.

(h) focuses more on solutions to problems and makes a conscious effort to solve them with very little or no complaints. The person gains valuable experience in the process leading up to achievement.

(i) has fully understood the connection between the dominating thoughts on one’s mind and physical realization of those dominating thoughts. As a result, such an individual makes a conscious effort every moment of each day to block out negative thoughts from whatever source from not only reaching but also not dominating their minds.

(j) has fully understood the power of the human mind and therefore fills it with positive thoughts of achievement of anything whatsoever, without limitations. The individual understands the words of Napoleon Hill, “There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge.”

Having read this piece, you may need to do a rethink if you have unconsciously made a decision of poverty before now. If your true desire in life is genuine wealth and success, then you need to make a conscious decision on that beginning from now.

Remember, there’s only one way to attain genuine wealth and success in life – not by a mere wish but by a conscious decision to do so through our thoughts, words and actions.

More wealth secrets next week.
